Jerrie Lawhorn - On Different Roads

In my job, I work with children with disabilities and their families every day. There are questions we get about the child’s future, like, “Will they have friends?” “Will they be able to talk?” “Will they ever live on their own?” Parents and guardians are scared, wondering how to help their neurodivergent child succeed. I can’t predict the future and I can’t give specific how-to’s. The only answer I can give is, “Love them.” This theme is shown time and time again in the stories I research. There is often some adult who loved and encouraged their child to be successful, in spite of differences and stigma. Usually, the adult also gets their child an education and maybe even exposure to the arts. Just like with a typical child, a child with disabilities can thrive given education, art, and love. Jerrie Lawhorn, a performer and the first Black Deafblind American to earn a college degree, is a wonderful example of this.
